Backgammon: learn through an example

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Backgammon. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Bring this focus to a round

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Notice the feedback after each input.

What counts as success

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. The example below illustrates a decision.

The playing sequence

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

The controls to know

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Use the control method described here for this activity. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

One way to understand the rules

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

Notice this detail

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
